History
Disaster
News Network (DNN), produced by Disaster News Network Inc., is a news service
that tells the story of disaster response and suggests appropriate ways the
public can help survivors. It also facilitates information sharing among
disaster responders. Disaster News Network is a not-for-profit organization
founded in early 1996 to create content for social justice-related Web sites.
The organization's first project was the former Village Life Online Magazine,
launched in 1996 as the first exclusively Internet-based social justice news
magazine.
Disaster
News Network also covers related special topics such as preparedness
and mitigation, public violence, environmental hazards, and terrorist
disasters.
Basic
Beliefs
DNN’s goal is to provide information about
disaster sites in the US and other territories and to connect people who want to
make a difference. DNN pursues the human-interest stories, the ones that the
public needs to hear, with strengths in “follow-up journalism” (AP 1999).

Basic
Facts
The money collected is for the people in disaster
areas in need, not for the operations of the web site.
The site receives approximately 250,000 hits per
month and has received numerous awards, including the Critical Mass Award
and Pure Illusion Award’s Award of Excellence. By providing necessary
information about volunteer opportunities and donation information, this web
site has become one of the most useful resources for the public, not just
faith-based organizations.
